Sayulita, a small fishing village just 30 miles MAP north of Puerto Vallarta has become a popular seaside vacation place in Mexico, especially for surfers. I found this house, only 200 yards from the beach, shaded by a mass of palms, an easy walk to the surf.

Virgin River Country
In this part of Zion Canyon the Virgin River maybe a little difficult to locate in the fall. The area is quite level with dense bushes, tall trees, level terraine and low water allowing rather aimless meandering.
I've tried to convey that mood by softening lines, values and colors. Even the normally hard looking canyon walls have been softened to match the mood on the canyon floor.

Zion Utah
Zion Canyon is part of The Zion National Park in Utah. Normally the canyon is only open to the tour buses during the peek tourist months, but starting October 31st they open it to all passenger traffic. That is when the artists and photographers flood the canyon, as they are then able to stop any place and do their thing.
This scene is a hiking trail near the summer housing for employees. The cabin I did import from the small town of Virgin, just outside of the park.

Cabo Village
From San Jose del Cabo take the hiway east past the airport. You will pass the turnoff to Caduano(small, remote and a some cattle)then the turn off to Santiago, a good place to have lunch. Along the way you will notice the large white concrete ball marking the Tropic of Cancer, a good spot for photos. Continuing east take the La Ribera turn off to the beach. A neat village with lots of photo opportunities, thus the above painting.

Oaks and Sycamores
The park on Reche Rd. 3 miles west of I15 offers a large variety of old trees that can lead to an interesting composition when a careful selection of a few is made. Here the Ranger had the flag up and the colors added more life to the scene. In another scene, a ground flower lead-in would add some spark to the scene.

Red Mountain Creek
Red Mountain's peaks, in south west Colorado, are tinted by orangy/yellow iron oxides, thus the color of the creek bed rocks. The creek is swollen from a late September rain storm just now moving out of the area. The air was fresh with the scent of wet firs and clean rushing water.

Spring at Rainbow
A favorite painting location for our group. Looking across the creek, this composition of scrub oaks with barely new leaves and turqoise umbrella made an interesting color combination.Just add some left over dead winter grasses and a little Manganese Blue sky.

Double Canyon Lands
Double Canyon spills onto the grass lands plain just south of the junction of route 76 and Couser Canyon. Herds of cattle graze there adjacent to a large truck farming operation. This piece was painted from afar, of one of the ranch buildigs nestled on a raised knoll. The spring greens on this sunny day, nicely compliment the building's red roof.

Bunk House
On Wednesday's paintout at the nursey I found this scene on the back of the property. The early morning sun was cutting through the trees and bushes along the creek and lighting up the end of the building. The gray greens of the live oak tree and those of the shack made an interesting color scheme.

Rainbow Antiques
North of Escondido on I15 take the Rainbow exit. Behind the restaurant and gas, antique sales and artshow take place on weekends. On weekdays you may paint the park like setting with stream running through and various large trees. This is one of the antique buildings, I caught when the sun was just right.

Canyon Road
The mid-section of my canyon road parallels Dead Horse Creek on the west and a small cattle ranch on the east. It traverses through 3oo year old spreads of Live Oak trees and tall stands of Eucalyptus. Five hundred years ago, Indians gathered acorns here and ground them on the rocks making a flour.

The pond on the north end of the golf course in Fallbrook has many interesting positions from which it can be painted. This looks north from Via Del Robles into the tall Eucalyptus stand on the far side. Take Gird road north from Rt. 76 thru the Fallbrook Golf Club and Via Del Robles is the first road on the left.

Couser Canyon Avos

This plein air painting was painted on one of those dry, clear, windy Santa Ana days. Between Lilac road and Pala Ranch, Couser Canyon road drops radically at times, twisting and turning down thru avocado ranches like this. Hugging the inside of a hairpin turn I was able to setup out of the wind. Got lots of waves from passerbys. 18 x 24" Acrylic, stretched canvas.

Island Inlet

On Vancouver Island at Fanny Bay take the short ferry ride to Denman Island. Drive to the otherside and board the Honby Island ferry. On Hornby pick roadside blackberries, lay in the sun at the sandy beach and pickup some great breads at the bakery. Between the islands' quiet waters where the tall timbers open up, similar scenes will be revealed.

Lilac Ranch

In the Keyes Canyon area of Lilac Road and just south of the Pala Indian Reservation this small horse ranch is tucked away under some enormous Live Oaks and old Eucalyptus trees. Early morning sun can slip under the tree limbs and throw a brillant light on the old house for about an hour each day. Time enough to do a sketch for future reference. 11 x14 Acrylic on Artists Board.

Dead Horse Canyon

Dead Horse Canyon in Escondido still has a few rustic homes along the creek that feeds Lake Hodges. This bright sunny day gave the landscape a pastel appearance. The tile roof and bouganvilla contrast nicely with the greens of the trees and a steep dry foreground drops off steeply towards the cool creek waters below.

From Kaanapali take the coast road north to Kahana for some great Mexican food. We had to fill up three teens each evening so the price was right. If you continue north, then thru the golf courses at Kapalua its not far to a large sandy beach. Returning south of kahana in late afternoon along the west facing coast, you'll see scenes like this.

Mahone Bay

Along Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, between Bayswater and Indian Point some fishermen are "up for the season".
The contrast of the turqoise boat and the red/orange larger boat caught my eye.. Other reds further enhanced the composition, with the ultramarine water completing the palette triad.

Camden Maine is a joy in September. Most of the tourists have gone home, the seasonal business owners have gone to Florida, the weather is cooler and the tree colors are fabulous. This early morning scene of the sun eating away at the low-lying fog promises a sunny and crisp day for sailing.

Cape George

The small village is out on a cape by the same name and overlooks St. Georges Bay in Nova Scotia. This fisherman/farmer has his boat up till next season and is probably tending to the sheep. The greens here are intense, and this time of year mixed with golden rod. The view over the bay is a magnificent mixture of blues, with an occasional seagull sailing by on a thermal.
